Decide if your product fits Product Hunt community

Not every product is doing great on PH. There are many good products that didn’t benefit from being on Product Hunt. Look through the projects that were already submitted there and find out if your product will appeal to the community.

Register an account using Twitter or Facebook
Set up a profile picture

Go to Ship website and create a new project
Fill in the name of your project
Add a tagline

Briefly describe the product using maximum 60 symbol; it should reflect the purpose of the product and what problem it solves. Make it as clear and concise as possible. Don’t use marketing slogans.

Good examples: “A curated directory of 400 resources & tools for startups”, “The best free stock photos in one place”, “Email copy from great companies.”

Choose 4 topics related to your product

These are categories of services that your product fits into. Choose three or four topics only, and make sure that they are relevant to what your product does.

Add your product makers

Here add people who took part in creating the project.

Go to the next page to fill in the details about the product
Fill in “Who” section

Use 1-2 lines to tell about yourself.

Fill in “Why” section

Explain why people should subscribe to you.

Give people a reason to subscribe to the website; for example, provide early access or discount to your product. Usually, such offers work much better.

Upload a logo of your product

Maximum width of the logo 200px.

Set a brand color

Copy and paste a hex (a sumple) of your brand color. You can find it inside a brandbook on the website, or just ask your designer about it.

Upload a background image

You can use the image you have, or find a free photo on Unsplash.

Write a thank-you message

You can use a GIF from Giphy. In this case, your message will be more friendly and welcoming.

Fill in your social networks
Click “Update” button to save the changes
Click “Preview Page” button

Check if you're happy with the result. Once again check the texts, pictures, and general meaning. It must be clear to every person who come to the page what problem your product solves. People's decision to subscribe depends on it.

Import existing email list if you already have one

At the bottom of the page, the number of subscribers to the product will be displayed. If you have an existing email list, be sure to import it - it will raise your social proof. Here works the pattern: if there are already people in the restaurant, other people are more eager to join them.

In the future, you will be able to export the list of subscribers collected during the campaign and import it into any email marketing tool.

The more attention you get with your post, the better. Tell in your Facebook post about the idea of ​the project, how you came up with it, what inspired you to create the product. Write the text so that it looks lively.

Make a list of 10 hunters who fit your product best

You need someone who posts projects of similar topic. Consider the number of votes for projects. The higher the average number of upvotes for the hunter, the more likely that your project will launch successfully on Product Hunt.

Choose a launch date

It is better to choose midweek days, from Tuesday to Thursday.

Choose a launch time

The earlier the launch on a given day, the higher the upvote total you’ll get. So, try to start as soon as possible.

Reach out to the hunters

After you’ve got a list of suitable hunters, write them a letter asking to place your information on Product Hunt. Be polite and brief. Tell the hunter why you love your project and why you want them to post it.

Write a welcome comment

There, briefly tell about your product: whom it is for, what role it plays. Let people feel the passion and excitement you have for what you are doing. The text should be concise, not more than three paragraphs. Think about how with your comment you can involve people into discussion.

Right after you posted on PH, send a newsletter to your subscribers

Use your subscribers email list to inform them that you just launched on Product Hunt. Ask your subscribers to support the project, but don’t push them to vote for your product, or you’ll be banned.

Use funny GIFs in your message to show your excitement.
